Summer Academy

Summer Academy is a 5-week summer program that supports first-semester freshmen in making a successful transition to college. Through Summer Academy, students can earn academic credits, participate in free tutoring sessions, and make new friends!

Classes are scheduled during the morning hours to allow participants to have their afternoons free.  Information about the 2010 Summer Academy will be available in early 2010.   

Interested students are encouraged to review eligibility requirements before submitting an application.  Scholarships may be available for those who qualify.

Information for Applicants 

Along with meeting eligibility requirements, the following must be completed to be considered for the Summer Academy Program:
  • Students must complete the Summer Academy online application
  • Students must file a 2009-2010 FAFSA

Things to keep in mind:

  • If ASU requires additional paperwork to be turned in after your FAFSA is filed, please mark "SUMMER ACADEMY" on the top of each form to help ensure priority processing.
  • If you have questions about how to file your 2009-2010 FAFSA, please contact Financial Aid at (602) 496-4372 and let them know that you are a Summer Academy student.
  • The 2009-2010 FAFSA must be filed regardless of financial need.
If you have already completed an online application, you do not need to take any other steps except to be sure that you have done the following:
  • filed a 2009-2010 FAFSA
  • submitted proof of your MMR immunizations to ASU
  • sent in a cashier’s check or money order for the non-refundable $30 participation fee
  • signed the participant confirmation form
  • registered for the appropriate Summer Academy classes described in your welcome packet

Students who participate in Summer Academy will receive the following:

  • Textbooks for all Summer Academy courses

  • Dedicated Tutoring services

  • Weekly programming

Students accepted into Summer Academy will be required to pay a fee of $30 upon confirming their participation.   Scholarships may be available for those who qualify.

 

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident

  • Scheduled to graduate from high school in Spring 2010

  • Admitted to ASU for Fall 2010 as a full time, first-semester freshman

  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by the the ASU Office of Student Financial Assistance (http://students.asu.edu/financial-aid).  IMPORTANT: Students must have a completed 2009-10 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file.  THE DEADLINE FOR FILING THE ON-LINE FAFSA IS APRIL 23, 2010.
  • Submitted a completed Summer Academy Application

NOTE: Students applying for Summer Academy should plan to participate in ASU New Student Orientation and complete the University Placement Exams by May 1, 2010.

 

Please note:  April 14, 2010 is the priority deadline for Summer Academy applications.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be able to work during the program?  Yes!  The Summer Academy schedule was specifically designed to allow students to take classes in the morning and to have their afternoons free for work, family, or other obligations.

Do I have to reschedule my Fall classes if I am enrolled in the same classes during Summer Academy? Upon the successful completion of your summer courses you will likely need to update your fall schedule. Your academic advisor can provide you with more detailed information regarding any adjustments to your fall schedule.

How many students will be in my classes? Summer Academy classes will range in size from 19-25 students.
