Supplemental Instruction - For Faculty
What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-assisted learning model in which students who have previously excelled in a particular course facilitate review sessions for students currently enrolled in that same course. In conjunction with Supplemental Instruction (SI) staff and selected faculty, SI Leaders hold out-of-class study and review sessions to reinforce course content and offer course-specific study, problem-solving and test-preparation strategies.
Students who participate regularly in SI sessions receive higher grades, on average, than students who do not participate.
SI Leaders:
-
Participate in a specialized training program that reinforces effective learning strategies
-
Attend class regularly to stay up-to-date on course content
-
Facilitate 3-4 study/review sessions per week
-
Communicate regularly with faculty members and SI staff
Faculty may be asked to:
-
Assist with selecting candidates for SI Leaders
-
Encourage students to participate in SI sessions
- Meet regularly with SI leaders to discuss course content
-
Provide feedback to SI administrative staff
- Provide course information for SI program evaluation
