Math Refresher Program
About the Math Refresher Program
ASU’s Math Refresher Program is designed to support first-year students in developing math skills for their required math courses. Students in the Math Refresher Program take a reduced course load during their first semester while they focus on developing core academic skills. Each student in the program works with an academic advisor to develop a course schedule that meets ASU requirements and his or her individual academic goals.
How Was I Selected for the Math Refresher Program?
Students who enter ASU with a score lower than 60 on the Unified Placement Test for mathematics are participants in the Math Refresher Program during their first semester at ASU. For more information on the Unified Placement Test, including preparing for and retaking the exam, visit the math placement web site.
How Does the Program Work?
Students in the Math Refresher Program enroll in a maximum of 10 credit hours at ASU plus a required 3-credit Intermediate Algebra course taught on ASU’s campuses by the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD). Upon successful completion of Intermediate Algebra with a grade of C or better, a Math Refresher student, in consultation with his or her academic advisor, enrolls in the appropriate math course for his or her degree program.Students work with an advisor to create a class schedule that meets the student’s goals and university requirements. During the first semester, a typical student in the Math Refresher Program might also enroll in First-Year Composition, critical thinking and literacy, and elective courses based on their placement scores and high school coursework.
Note: Additional fees will be assessed on your ASU billing statement to cover the cost of Intermediate Algebra. See Tuition, Fees, and Billing below for more information.
Is This Program Required?
The Math Refresher Program is required for all first-year students who score lower than 60 on the Unified Placement Test for mathematics.
Students who complete Intermediate Algebra with a C or better prior to the start of the fall semester will need to send their transcripts to ASU. Once a student’s transcript showing successful completion of Intermediate Algebra is received and verified, the student will work with an advisor to select the appropriate math course at ASU. Students who have satisfied the requirement will be permitted to increase their ASU courses beyond 10 hours.
How Do I Register for Intermediate Algebra?
You will register for Intermediate Algebra at orientation. It will appear on your class schedule, billing statements, and ASU transcript as “JAC 101.” Upon completion of Intermediate Algebra, MCCCD will automatically submit transcripts for Math Refresher students to ASU.
To find Intermediate Algebra sections on your campus, search the ASU schedule of classes for “JAC 101.” The results will display the days and times of the MAT 122: Intermediate Algebra sections offered on ASU campuses by MCCCD.
Maximum of 10 credit hours at ASU
Students in the Math Refresher Program may enroll in a maximum of 10 credit hours at ASU plus 3 credit hours of Intermediate Algebra through the Maricopa County Community Colleges for their first semester (Fall 2008) for a total of 13 credit hours. This will allow students to focus on developing core academic abilities, particularly in mathematics, during the first semester.
Tuition, Fees, and Billing
Students will be charged ASU and MCCCD tuition and fees on their ASU billing statement. Students will submit payment for all courses directly to ASU.
Tuition is $71 per credit hour for Arizona residents who are covered by the MCCCD. For all other students, the tuition is $96 per credit hour.* All students pay an additional $20 for MCCCD registration and transcript fees.
* Out of state students who enroll for 7 or more hours at a MCCCD school pay out-of –state tuition of $286 per credit hour.
Enrollment Verification
The ASU Registrar’s Office will provide Math Refresher students with documentation verifying total credit hour enrollment. This documentation can be used to provide proof of full-time student status for student enrolled in at least 12 credit hours for purposes including scholarships and health insurance.
Financial Aid
The Student Financial Assistance Office will consider Intermediate Algebra/JAC 101 enrollment equivalent to 3 credit hours. Financial aid may be used to cover the additional charge associated with Intermediate Algebra/JAC 101. Financial aid may be prorated if combined enrollment is less than full-time (12 credit hours). For scholarship renewal, students required to enroll in JAC 101 need to complete a minimum of 13 hours (including Intermediate Algebra/JAC 101) for the term.
