When should I come to the Writing Center?
- As soon as you are given a writing assignment, call for an appointment.
- At least two days before the paper is due, come in for an appointment.
What services are available?
- 30-40 minute individual writing tutorials
- Materials to assist writers
- Computer access for writing and research
- Manuals: APA, MLA, Turabian, Chicago
- Reference collection
What typically happens during a Writing Center tutorial?
- Your writing tutor will ask about your current project.
- The tutor may either read - or ask you to read - the paper aloud. The tutor will ask questions about clarity, organization, support, and sense, etc.
- If you have no paper to read, the writing tutor can help you plan the paper.
How can the tutor help me with my writing?
The tutor will help you with many aspects of writing, including
- understanding the assignment.
- developing ideas.
- thesis and support.
- organization.
- clarity and coherence.
- research issues.
- documentation - APA, MILA, avoiding plagiarism, paraphrasing.
- grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Will coming to the Writing Center improve my grades?
Grades are an instructor's area of responsibility. Students who use the Writing Center, however, generally get better grades on papers and feel more confident in their writing. The quality of the paper you turn in ultimately depends on your effort.
