Graduate Writing Camps

Summer Graduate Writing Camps

University Academic Success Programs (UASP) is committed to supporting graduate students during their time at ASU.  In addition to providing graduate writing and statistics tutoring, UASP offers unique summer camp experiences in June for ASU enrolled graduate students.

Facilitated by UASP’s Writing Center staff, these camps guide students through the process of writing at the graduate level. Combining both instruction and support, the camps provide skills and strategies that prepare graduate students to navigate the demands of graduate-level writing.

The Success in Graduate Writing Camp provides opportunities for ASU enrolled graduate students to learn more about the academic writing and research demands of graduate school.  Two Dissertation Writing Camps (one online and one in-person) provide opportunities to support ASU doctoral candidates and dissertation prospectus writers in achieving their writing goals.

Success in Graduate Writing Camp

The Success in Graduate Writing Camp is a week-long interactive series of instructional sessions designed to assist graduate-level ASU students in developing and enhancing academic writing and research skills. Held at the Downtown Phoenix campus, the camp has 60 available seats, and a $50 program fee is required. Graduate students enrolled in any ASU graduate certificate, master’s degree, or doctoral degree program are eligible to register. A limited number of scholarships have been provided by the Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA). Students who register will be notified if their fee can be covered by the scholarship.

The Success in Graduate Writing Camp includes interactive, instructional sessions focused on topics such as:

  • Strategies for developing specific types of writing (e.g., literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and research papers)
  • Critical reading techniques
  • Ways to analyze and write effective arguments
  • Ways to customize a calendar to help chart and meet graduation goals
  • Methods for keeping track of research
  • Tips for writing research questions
  • Tips for communicating with faculty

Dissertation Writing Camps

The Dissertation Writing Camp is a week-long camp that offers ASU doctoral students dedicated time and space to write their prospectuses, dissertations, or applied projects. UASP Writing Center Staff facilitate two separate, week-long Dissertation Writing Camps during the summer:  an online camp and an in-person camp at the Tempe campus.  Each camp has a limited number of seats, and a $50 program fee is required. Doctoral students who have reached candidacy or who are currently writing their dissertation prospectuses are eligible to register.  A limited number of scholarships have been provided by the Graduate & Professional Student Association (GPSA). Students who register will be notified if their fee can be covered by the scholarship.

Each Dissertation Writing Camp offers ASU doctoral students the following:

  • opportunities to interact with peers to discuss writing-in-progress
  • optional workshops on topics related to the dissertation writing process
  • opportunities to have writing reviewed by a writing center staff member
  • electronic resources to aid in writing and revision
